USE & CARE of the Blue Gum 200W HMI

HEAD AND BALLAST

Note: The Kobold ballast is an advanced electronic device that requires care in it's use. Failure to treat this unit with the following guidelines may initiate premature failure.

Note: Disconnect the head from the ballast before proceeding.

  1. When installing a lamp do not touch the glass envelope with your fingers. Should you touch the envelope inadvertently please clean with alcohol immediately. Lamp can only be installed one way and should be seated properly.
  2. Please ensure that the lamp source is not tilted. The lamp should not be touching any part of the reflector.
  3. Inspect lamp seating and reflector proximity periodically as lamp may jar loose particularly after transporting head.
  4. Inspect lamp's outer envelope periodically for hazing (smoky deposits). If hazing is present replace lamp.
  5. Inspect lamp's inner envelope periodically for clarity. After long term use the quartz glass will recrystallize, taking on a textured appearance, and should be replaced without further use.
  6. The lamp is rated for an average life of 200 hours based on an on/off cycle of 3 hours on to 1 hour off with a hot re-strike every 15 minutes. Count on a considerable shorter life based on real life conditions. Inspect often for signs of age see notes #4 & 5.
  7. Keep head clean and free of dust and moisture. When traveling, pack in a enclosed and cushioned carry case.
  8. Important! The unit should work for a minimum of 30 seconds before switching off. The lamp source needs this time to get the necessary temperature. This is important for the lamp life and the hot restarting procedure.
    • After striking the lamp, we suggest in general leaving the unit on for at least 5 minutes.
    • Although the lamp has a hot re-strike feature we recommend that this feature is used sparingly. refraining from its use will extend lamp life and reduce component failure.
  9. Do not leave the battery ballast on for more than 20 minutes or the AC ballast on for more than 45 minutes. Additional cooling may be necessary should you need to operate beyond these times.
  10. Obstructing ventilation slots will cause unit to overheat.
  11. If stored at low temperatures unit may need warm before lamp will strike.
  12. If your ballast has blown a fuse do not bother trying to replace the blown fuse it will not work. The unit needs to be first serviced by a qualified service technician.
  13. If unit has failed do not activate power or strike switches rapidly out of frustration. Please return the unit for repair.
  14. Change the head lamp often (see head care instructions). An old lamp can cause premature electronic failure.
  15. Keep ballast clean and free of dust and moisture. When traveling pack in a enclosed and cushioned carry case.
  16. It is obvious to a service technician when a unit has been dropped or otherwise mistreated. Please treat your equipment with care. Thank you for your attention to these details. We would like to have your Kobold equipment performing well.
